Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Indiana University with an M.B.A. in marketing and bachelor's degrees in journalism and business. I was editor of my high school and college newspapers (The Kirkwood (Mo.) Call and Indiana Daily Student), then worked at the St. Petersburg Times more than 15 years before coming to Poynter in 2004.
At the Times, I covered police, schools and business. Then I switched to the business side and held a variety of marketing and business analysis positions, including director of the newspaper's in-house advertising agency. I started the Times' company store. Then I returned part-time to the newsroom as a copy editor before coming to Poynter.
Social/Volunteer Organizations
I'm president of the Indiana University Journalism Alumni Board. I'm on the advisory committee for the Melrose/John Hopkins/Lakewood journalism program for the Pinellas County Schools. I'm also on the advisory board for the Center for Scholastic Journalism at Kent State University. I guest teach at the JEA/NSPA conventions and Florida Scholastic Press Association conventions.
More Information
I am a single mom with two sons, and I'm involved at their schools. I play tennis, and I spend more time than I should playing videogames, such as World of Warcraft. I've played euchre -- a card game I learned as a child growing up in the Midwest -- with the same group of friends since the turn of the century. (That sounds like a long time!)
